Brugge

Pictures taken in Brugge, December 2008. Jonathan Meades makes the point that it's a symptom of the 'Mediterranean envy' we have that towns like Brugge and Ghent are often referred to as 'The Venice of North', but Venice is never called 'The Brugge of the South'

A topsy-turvey world...

Tonight's Question Time featured:

- Will Self, an author, having to explain to Nadine Dorries, a Conservative MP, why the value of sterling is plummeting. You'd have thought she'd at least have some grasp of the issues. Ms Dorries is apparently the holder of Spectator Magazine's Readers' Representative Award in the Parliamentarian of the Year Awards.

- David Dimbleby, a television presenter, having to explain to Jim Knight, a Labour minister, what a panjandrum is. That's ok though - Mr Knight is only the Minister for Schools and Learners - a job for which having a grasp of English that extends to words with more than two syllables is evidently not a prerequisite.
